The main centre is Gisborne the first mainland place in the world to see the sun rise renowned for its gourmet dining including seafood of all kinds- Kai moana is Maori for sea food.

Gisborne is at the far east corner of North Island and it encompasses ,all the charm of the East Cape, Opotiki, Wairoa, Mahia, Hicks bay, Poverty bay, and all the beautiful golden sandy beaches that extend down to Gisborne, known for its fine surfing beaches.

The first to surf in was Captain Cook in his ship “Endeavour” in 1769, very much a Maori influenced area the carved meeting houses and Maori cultural way of life can be seen all around.
